The International Olympic Committee has officially cut wrestling from the Olympics starting with the 2020 games. The modern pentathlon was expected to be cut, but in a surprising move, the IOC dropped wrestling, one of the oldest sports in the Olympic program, instead. This is a huge loss for the United States which dominated in this sport, being the most successful country with 124 medals, 50 of them being gold.

In the 2012 Summer Games, 344 athletes competed in 11 wrestling events. The US men’s and women’s teams took home two bronze and two gold medals.

Wrestling still has a chance to be included in the 2020 games, but it will have to compete against seven other sports. The seven other sports trying to be included are baseball/softball, karate, roller sports, sport climbing, squash, wakeboarding and wushu.

Baseball and softball were the last sports removed from the Olympics in 2005, effective for the 2008 games. Golf and rugby will be taking their place, joining the games in 2016.
