Formed toward the end of 2010, lo-fi indie pop four-piece Being There met at university in Manchester, England, before they relocated to London to concentrate on making music. Members Sammy Lewis (guitar, vocals), James Robinson (bass, vocals), Tom Rapanakis (drums), and Nick Olorenshaw (guitar) drew on a collective nostalgia for their carefree and boundless teenage years, which inspired their youthful and raw sound. While '90s influences such as Pavement, Teenage Fanclub, and the Lemonheads were clearly audible, they also channeled the fuzzy shoegaze guitars of the Jesus and the Mary Chain. Main songwriter and lead vocalist Lewis had previously worked with London-based indie label Young and Lost Club as a solo artist, and the label subsequently signed up his new venture from the outset. Being There took their hazy alt-rock on the road with labelmates Noah and the Whale during 2011 alongside their own extensive touring schedule, where they wrote and discarded many songs for their debut album.
